The Hawaiian way to say "Happy Birthday!"

I made this cake for my mom's birthday in October.  My mom traveled to Hawaii over the summer and since she had such a wonderful time, that I wanted her birthday cake to remind her of the islands.

This is a carrot cake with a cream cheese buttercream filling.  I covered the cake in white Wilton fondant.  It's a little lumpy on the top, I did not yet have my wonderful cake leveler.  The design for this cake had me stumped for a while.  I didn't have enough time to order fondant cutters that looked like Hawaiian flowers, so I decided to paint the flowers.  There's a first time for everything!  I did a few practice flowers on some cardstock, then went to town on the cake!  I cut out the lettering using a Wilton alphabet set that I picked up at Hobby Lobby.  Although it's difficult to see in this picture (sorry, it's a crappy iPhone camera shot), I put some brown sugar along a base of the cake to look like sand and cover up the fondant edge.

My mom loved it!

why cook when you can bake?

I love to bake.  You've probably already come to that conclusion just by looking at the title of this blog.  There's nothing better than a house that smells of something yummy baking in the oven.  I decided to start this blog as a way to photo-document my baking creations.  My favorite thing to make are cupcakes, but I am slowing branching out to cakes and other baked goods.

Got to go preheat that oven!
